Falling circulations
Plummeting advertising revenues
Savage cost cutting – uncertain future
Journalist job losses |
|
Anyone presently working in the newspaper industry will almost certainly have personal experience of one or more of the headlines above. For years now it’s been a story of remorseless decline - in the UK and Ireland, across America and Canada - and even glimmers of silver lining are hard to find.
The ‘perfect storm’ of the credit crunch, collapsing housing markets and rising unemployment have combined to make the past three years even gloomier. ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation) figures for UK regional titles have announced circulation falls of 11% and more for two years in a row. Here’s a snapshot from round the country for year-on-year figures released in August 2010:-
Cambridge Evening News – down 11.9% to 21,997
Western Daily Press – down 11.8% to 31,809
Nottingham Evening Post – down 11.3% to 42,529
Journal in Newcastle – down 11.3% to 28,232 |
The Dundee Evening Telegraph was the only regional daily to buck the downward trend and post an increase in sales - up 0.4pc to 23,269 (about 90 copies).
Reactions to stop the rot have varied – we are hearing from colleagues about managements dispensing with subs, cutting staffing levels and re-writing the rules on pensions. None represent a satisfactory long-term solution and meanwhile, morale is at rock bottom.
Sure newspapers have websites (they, conversely, have shown exactly the opposite figures from ABCe, reporting significant growth in traffic over the past 12 months) but they are there, first and foremost, to market the traditional printed product.
So what is the future of a regional daily carrying massive overheads on the back of shrinking sales? Well no one seriously believes the present business model is sustainable over the long term. |
For the past decade we have watched as the internethas gone from novelty to necessity. As revolutions go the all conquering web has been as beneficial as it has been bloodless, improving the way we learn, changing the way we do business and transforming the way we communicate.
Because it is a phenomenon that has no obvious boundaries we can only wait and wonder where it will lead us in the next ten years. One thing is certain, between now and 2020 the web will become the communication channel of choice - across all age groups and in all walks of life.
The natural way forward, we say, is to reconnect with local communities and put the best traditions of community journalism to work by delivering the news exclusively via the web. |

If you and your colleagues have ever talked about running your own newspaper or news magazine, the SuperLocalSites.com formula offers the complete package and delivers the dream.
This unique product had been designed by journalists for journalists. We, 'the euvue team,' have many years experience in regional and national journalism and listened carefully to feedback from friends and colleagues in the media sector as the online format was being developed.
The result is a rich online multimedia experience that uses automated search engine (Google, Yahoo, Ask etc) friendly software to create the ultimate no-nonsense news magazine website format.
Our esearch we found that the 'blog' format scores the biggest points when it comes to high rankings on most of the popular search engines. Higher rankings equals more visits which opens the door to more potential revenue.
Here's a definition of a blog...
'Blog' is an abbreviated version of 'weblog,' a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog contains diary-type commentary and links to articles on other websites, usually presented as a list of entries in reverse chronological order. Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.
Our vision was to create a website that allowed freelance writers and journalists like yourself to take control and manage a news magazine website without having to write a single line of code. Here's a list of the five 'must have' features we considered when developing our news magazine website format.
 |
A quick and easy way to submit a article or story . |
 |
To have the look and feel of a professional news magazine website with video and audio capability. |
 |
An interactive website that made the most of rapidly expanding social networking sites. |
 |
Optimise new articles to be search engine friendly for high rankings. |
 |
For the site to be future proof and all the techie stuff to be taken care of. |
We decided to take a popular blogging tool, 'WordPress', strip it down to the bare bones and build it up from scratch to create a customised news magazine website that would tick all the boxes.
Wordpress was started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the presentation of typography online. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
Everything associated with 'Wordpress', from the documentation to the code itself, was created by and for the online community. WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are thousands of people all over the world contributing to it's development on a day to day basis. This is more than most commercial platforms.
This format is hugely beneficial as 'Wordpress' has over 11,000 apps (plugins) to fine tune your site and a feature-rich interface. For over eighteen months now we have developed, refined and tweeked the 'Wordpess' format to create a bespoke online news magazine website solution.
The euVue project as we call it has been created by journalists and web experts. It is currently registering over 50,000 unique visits and 250,000 page reads a month (that’s over 1500 visits to the site every day) – and figures are growing month-on-month.
The ongoing success we have experienced with the euVue project can now be yours.
Visit our 'live' site for a sample of how your site could look.

We have also developed a successful community site for the town and district of Chester-le-Street in County Durham. The site has won support and sponsorship from the council’s Area Action Partnership which has chosen euvuechester-le-street to promote its work in the community.
